Flower Power
Cloudy weather failed to dampen spirits at Leonardslee lakes & gardens on 6 May when members were treated to a trip to one of Europe’s most glamorous displays of flowering trees and shrubs.
The billowing blossoms of rhododendrons and azaleas brought gasps of amazement as Tom Loder, who runs the 240-acre site with twin sister Mary, conducted the party along avenues of scented blooms and passed drifts of vibrant yellows and pinks adorning the lower paths and the lakesides.
Members also marvelled at the intricate detail of the “Beyond The Dolls House” miniature Victorian village exhibition, which Tom’s father Robin has just completed after ten years’ development.
Members gathered in the adjacent Alpine House for a hot and cold buffet, with drinks, and a chance to sample a selection of locally brewed beers courtesy of Hepworth & Company, and locally supplied vintages from Deakin Fine Wines.
“It was a real joy to host the event,” said Tom, “and to find out more about the Club. The colours of the gardens are just as incredible in the autumn. Perhaps you can hold another event here then.” Not a bad idea.
